WKSJ-04 KERN

KERN

The chromatic anatomy of monochrome.

A saturated blue surface can fall well below a yellow one in the grayscale, while cyan retains its brightness and warmer colors occupy more intricate positions between them. KERN draws these values from twelve overlapping chromatic responses, including finer variations around reds, greens and skin-adjacent warmth. The transitions remain continuous, allowing differences to emerge within the materials themselves rather than as rigid divisions between color families.

Black remains absolute, and the tonal progression continues all the way to white. Lower values establish a dense foundation, while the upper range retains the space needed for luminous surfaces. KERN uses the full grayscale to give each material its own tonal presence, producing a monochrome image whose internal structure is shaped by the colors from which it originated.
